About Fisherman's Cottage
On the Gironde river
Mortagne-sur-Gironde is a lovely fishing village in the Charente-Maritime - only 20 minutes drive from the great beaches at Meschers and Royan. The village has all you need for your holiday - in the upper town there is a pizzeria, a bar, and all the essential shops including bank and post office.
Our Fisherman’s cottage is in the pretty port of La Rive, Mortagne-sur-Gironde. The cottage is just 100 metres from the port, where there are restaurants, cafes and a few shops - a boulangerie, a cabin selling freshly made hot dishes when you don’t feel like cooking, and a little stall with fresh fruit, wine and other essentials ! The house itself is an old fisherman’s cottage, and was once an “epicerie” (a village grocers shop) and has a large open plan living area, with a well equipped kitchen, and 3 bedrooms. There is a brand new timber decked terrace overlooking the port, with table, chairs and barbecue. The perfect holiday house from which to visit the tourist attractions in the area - to spend long days on the nearby beaches - or to simply soak up the sun and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of this wonderful area of France.

Cycling is a very popular activity, with kilometres of routes around our area. Cycle hire available.
There are some great walks in the area from a gentle stroll out to the estuary to a hike along the river to Port Maubert.
Leisure & Pleasure
In the port of La Rive there are a number of restaurants, then as you explore the area you will find some very good places to eat, Le Cottage at Arces, Auberge des Monards at Les Monards, and Le Domaine du Seudre at St Germain du Seudre being three of our favourites.
Sailing / Kayaking
There is a very good sailing school in Port Maubert, it’s a great place to leave the kids if you want to go wine/cognac tasting ! Otherwise there are sand yachts at St Georges de Didonne or sailing in Royan.
There is also kayaking at Port Maubert.

Vineyards abound with most doing cellar sales and tastings, the vineyards in the Mortagne area producing mainly Cognac & Pineau, with some good local white, red and rose wines. The area around Mortagne is a haven for birdlife - there are wonderful walks out towards the Gironde estuary, where you can spot storks, herons, egrets and other waterbirds. There are guided walks on Sunday mornings - enquire at the Tourist Office.

As soon as we stepped into the beautifully presented Fisherman’s Cottage we felt its peace and comfort envelop us. Everything in the gite has been carefully considered, so that whatever you need is there for you, cleverly placed exactly where you want or need it to be. We had a wonderfully restful and interesting week, finding that perfect holiday sense of having been lifted out of ourselves for a while. We have no hesitation in whole-heartedly recommending your stay at Fisherman’s Cottage.— Katherine & Nev, Somerset
Just returned from a wonderful relaxing holiday in Mortagne. This is the first year the cottage has been available to rent and every care has been taken by the owners to provide a clean, well equipped, homely feel for your holiday. We loved it so much we extended our holiday and have already booked again for next year.— Sparky, United Kingdom

Meet The Owners
We are Blue and Jo Walshe and after spending lots of time in France, and especially in the Charente-Maritime area over many years we have finally done it and moved here ! We now live just a few kilometres away from our gite in Mortagne, which we bought in 2013. We have always loved France for its food, its wine, and especially for its way of life - we have found a little bit of paradise here - and hope you will too.
Australian, well balanced - chip on both shoulders. Suppose to be retired but spends most of the time working for the ORGANISER.
LOVES :- Living in France, the weather, the wine, the food
HATES :- Cold dank weather.
LOVES :- Spending lots of time relaxing in bed, sometimes checking out the other cats to make sure they are not up to something he should be involved in.
